A plan by 20 major aluminum smelters in China to cut output sent prices of the metal spinning to a record high Thursday, despite market watchers playing down the impact on supplies. This latter figure represents more than double the demand recorded by the industry in 2007, and is also 20% higher than the figure previously expected by industry analysts and participants. The main demand drivers will be infrastructure and business construction in developing economies, particularly in China, but also in other emerging regions, such as India and the Middle East.
