Alcoa Inc. (AA) and the Brunei Economic Development Board signed a memorandum of understanding to enable to more detailed studies into the feasibility of establishing a modern, gas-powered aluminum smelter in Brunei Darussalam.

Under the terms, Alcoa, a New York-based aluminum maker, and the Brunei agency will determine the optimum scope and dimensions of proposed facilities, a power-delivery strategy and a desirable location for a facility.

Alcoa and BEDB envision a facility having an operational capacity of 360,000 metric tons a year with potential for an eventual 600,000 to 700,000 metric tons a year capacity.
