SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)-The National Development and Reform Commission has approved a plan by Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (ACH), or Chalco, to build an alumina refinery with an annual production capacity of 800,000 metric tons in Xing county, Shanxi province.

The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administrative Commission didn’t say on its Web site late Wednesday when construction on the project will begin, when it will go on stream or the total investment.

The plant will use local bauxite reserves, which totals 130 million metric tons in the county, the commission said.

Bauxite is used to make alumina, a key raw material in the production of aluminum.
